Not only do they pollute the bays they are a hazard to navigation. The worldwide demand for Blue Crab is at an all time high due to NAFTA. Crab prices are high. I hate to see anyone put out of work but the watermen just need to find another occupation. Its odd that every other industry in America is closing down and nobody says squatt, those hard working Americans had to find new jobs and so can the Watermen. So don't whine about how hard you have to work doing the kind of work that anyone would love to do, out on the water all day, sip the brew when you want, toke the roach, and if you say its hard work and little pay I'll tell you your all full of blubber.

Most of us have already "found new jobs" because of people like you and are now crabbing with pots, NAFTA doesn't have anything to do with the demand for crabs,it's called over populated and the food supply is getting smaller all the time because we waste food on those who would bite the hand that feeds them.

Dunno, I read your post and thought I'd missed the first page of the thread. If like you say "the worldwide demand for Blue Crab is at an all time high" and "crab prices are high" then why don't we want more traps, not less? Catch more, sell more, provide some jobs, provide some food, etc. What am I missing here? God knows the economy could use a little help....and so probably could the guys who do the crabbing.

How will I get my Phillips crab cakes?? ;? :o

They'll still make them when it all gets outsourced to China, except they'll be cheaper.

And we 1)won't have to avoid crab pots in the channel, and
2) Won't have to put up with the homey catch phrases on bumper stickers about "save[ing] your local fisherman--they do it on the water!"

Someone needs to set some crab pots in Paris Hilton's jail cell. They will fill up in a few hours.

Really, there are the buoys around here too. And a lot in the Keys during lobster season. I would not call them a "problem". I envy people who only have to worry about crab and lobster traps. What a great life that would be. Some people worry about how to make the rent, how to get food, if they will be blown up today or tomorrow, where the next gallon of drinking water will come from, and so on. If all you have to irk you is crab traps - consider yourself very lucky.

Hehe. This thread's gotta be a goof.

Personally, I think we should ban commercial fishing altogether. That way I could catch about 50 keeper flounder every day. I'd even donate some of them to poor children. Won't someone think of the children? Those commercial fishermen are preventing poor children from eating!

One time 5 years ago I put down 1 trap for 2 hrs. in the Sooke basinand got 22 legal dungeness. Hog heaven. 4 years ago crabbing was good. ... BUT...commercial crabbers.!
Now one or two in a day !!! With salmon head bait... At least I can still catch them.(salmon)
Why does everyone else think they can share/ steal my bounty/booty.

Seriously, if we are not moderate to minamilist, we will all have NONE. Of any. We kill too well.

Catch more, sell more, provide some jobs, provide some food, etc. What am I missing here? God knows the economy could use a little help....and so probably could the guys who do the crabbing. My thread was intended to attract awareness, and some concerned responses. I tried to keep it short. Fact is the commercial guyz are destroying their own buisness from over fishing the crabs. Shucks they have already destroyed the oysters in the Chesapeake. Crap populations from this years dredge shows a huge decrease in young crab. Thats not a good sign. Whats worse is everytime there is a decrease the recreational guyz get penalized. The last penalty was recreational can only take 5 1/4 inch crabs while the commercial guyz can take all the 5 inch they want. And to compound matters they can set there trot lines and traps 30 minutes before the recreational guy which leaves hardly nowhere to crab. And if you set your traps or trot line near them, they want to act like they own the bay, give you sheet. last year I had one swear at me, told me he would whip my ass, well he didn't whip my ass, he obviously didn't realize how quick my jabb was.
Its the same way everywhere, fish till there are no more fish, and in the end they still have to find work. I am not anti watermen, I am happy they can live on what they make, I just like be able to enjoy the meager amount of time I have on the water without being harrassed or spending time unwrapping crab pot line from my prop or losing tsumami's on the graveyard traps. Thank-you.
