The new 1KW SS164 tilted element transducer has a stainless steel housing. The existing B60 version of the tilted element has a bronze housing. Which is "better"? Will the B60 eventually be available with a stainless steel housing?

The SS164(1Kw) is better than the B60(600w). There are more elements and they are a higher quality. This is usually the case between 600 and 1000 watt transducers.

I know the guts of the SS164 are higher quality than the guts of the B60. I was asking about the housings--is stainless steel preferable to bronze?

Not necessarily. Stainless is more expensive, but not really required for a fiberglass boat. It's needed for an aluminum hull, and my guess is that Airmar decided just to make a single type of unit (for now, anyway) which will provide a solution for all markets.
