Does anyone have the BW logo in Line - Vector art? I work for a large printing company and we have a new digital press that can print on marine mats and carpet. I would like to make a mat or 2 for my boat.

The Boston Whaler logo is protected by copyright. You need to contact Boston Whaler for permission first. Not a big deal.

By the way, the letters used in the Boston Whaler logo were hand drawn many years ago before computers. Port and starboard are unique. This is why all the illegal copies sold on Ebay and elsewhere look so bad; you can't just use some computer font.

I don't think he needs permission if he is using it to making a mat for his own boat

Steve,

That is not really true. Yes, yes, I agree that there is little danger in making a mat without Whaler's permission, in fact I know he already has. I honestly doubt Whaler gives a hoot. I was just trying to point about what copyright is and what it means. My suggestion was a simple one: ask permission first.

I say this as someone who has, in fact, asked the Boston Whaler corporation for permission to use something that I recognized they owned the copyright of. You know what? Boston Whaler is a corporation made up of a finite number of reasonable people. Ask them a question and a real person gives you an answer. They are not mean ogres who are set on spoiling your fun. They are really nice folks who will talk to you, reply to your emails, help you with your Boston Whaler boat and whose job it is to make and sell boats. That's it. They exist to help you, the Whaler owner.

I do not want to contribute to the very modern notion that courtesy is obsolete. I believe it still serves a purpose and if you want to use something that belongs to someone else for your own use, why not do the right thing and ask their permission first? It's really just a life decision on my part not to subscribe to the idea that something of OK to do if you can get away with it. You are free to make your own decisions.
