Sunday I slowed to an idle to look for bait, the overheating buzzer went off so I turned the port side engine off for a few mins. When I fired back it ran fine when turning it up 3 or 4 grand.Headed out about 20 miles slowed to troll the buzzer went off again,so I trolled all afternoon on the starboard engine.Fired'em both up for the ride home not a peep? Idled around at the ramp never heard it again. While doing the freshwater flush it would't pee on the port side, the pisser didn't appear to be clogged ;?

Sounds like you need a new water pump impeller. Have you ever replaced them?

I can't understand how the impeller could be involved when I use the hose fittings (garden Hose)for the fresh water flush when the motor is not even on.Starboard piss'es just fine but the port dosen't?And once your under way sa 1500 rpm and up the port was the port was pissing fine?

I had the same problem. I changed the pressure valve and that fixed it. If you use the motor in saltwater or the chesapeake bay the valve gets really corroded. The parts cost me 3$, not including the plastic valve, I cleaned up the plastic valve and just used the gasket and the spring. Its a cheap fix before you replace an impeller, besides you should change the valve when you change an impeller anyway. Hope that does it for you!

Generally, when your alarm goes off at troll or idle then goes away at higher speeds means your not getting a good water flow. At higher speeds your getting good water flow due to the water force at speed. If your impellers are more than 2 years old I would replace them, since you are getting this kind of problem. It is either the impellers or the pressure valve item mentioned. One side note-If you have to drop the lower unit to replace that pressure valve then replace the water pump too since you are basically right there at the pump. (A water pump kit is pretty cheap).

spoke to a mechanic yesterday he mentioned a "pop valve" that had 2 screws in it located underneath the electrical things on the back side of the motor,he said this can become clogged , that I should clean and replace adding a little more tension to the spring. Is this the same check valve you mentioned? Thanks for your help , Jeff
