Just read about new unit from them that is so inovative they have applied for patent. Article in FS, or maybe it was saltwater fisherman. Any of you electronics gurus that understand such things have comments? Susposed to give much more detailed readings?

quote:This new patent-pending technology greatly improves the performance of fishfinders by providing fishermen with an infinite number of bandwidth settings for optimal performance in all depth ranges. Gone are the days of adjusting complex fishfinder settings - High Definition Fish Imaging Technology provides real “hands off” performance regardless of sea conditions. The Digitally Adaptive transmitter and receiver automatically analyze the water column and seabed and adjust the receiver bandwidth to match the water conditions.
“Our new high definition fish imaging technology is a real breakthrough for fisherman and boaters globally. For the first time in history a fishfinder uses true digital technology to infinitely and automatically vary the settings at the different depths in the water column to deliver unparalleled performance. Users can now have a level of detail and accuracy never seen before. This patent pending technology along with the industry’s leading displays give fisherman and boaters the greatest technology advantage available today,” said Terry Carlson, president of Raymarine. Not too bad ...$780 plus the display screen according to SWS.

Is that the DSM250 sounder black box type system I saw recently in either Saltwater Fisherman or some other mag.? If so it works with all their HSB2 systems which may make it reasonable for someone with existing equipment to add. 1000/600 watts. Cost? Their site doesn't give pricing.

davidd,
Does that price include the ducer? If so not bad. I already have the display unit, RL70rlc.

I read about it in the article reviewing the product, it's on the ray. web page Salt Water Sportsman reviewed and liked the product. On the cost... all it said is that it would work right out of the box but the screen and optional software where not included.

I called Raymaine and talked to their tech support people about the new "digital black box" - Here's what I learned:
If you have an existing Raymarine Diplay( sonar, raychart, radar, etc) unit that has HSB networking, you can plug the black box in to it and it will work. If you have a primary sonar unit like the 760 you go in to the settings on the 760 and turn the sonar portion to be a "repeater" so that the screen displays the info from the DSM 250. The same transducer you have today will work - just plug the transducer into the DSM250 then the DSM250 to your display via HSB. Retail prices will likely be in the 650 range for the blackbox - no transducer.

Someone posted a similar question about this 'new' system a week or two ago. I gave the same answer then that I will now. Who knows?
I didn't read the article in whatever magazine it was (Sport Fishing? Saltwater Sportsman?) because those things are nothing more than advertising sheets now days anyway and not worth reading. So I went to the RayMarine website to see what I could get from the Horses mouth. Of course what they publish is just advertising too, but at least its first hand advertising (you don't think the manufacturers actually provide the articles in those magazines do you?). All I saw is what Mumblerone was good enough to copy for us. As I read it, and this could be dead wrong, is that they seem to be touting some sort of new-to-them signal processing scheme that will improve operation when the machine is on Automatic. They way they speak of it you would get the impression that RayMarine believes their new automatic operation will work better than your or my (certain better than mine, maybe not better than yours) ability to tune the fish finder by hand.
Beyone that all I want to know is this: What does the word "Bandwidth" mean in the contex of the ReyMarone product description? I, for one, have no idea what they mean and have the feeling that they may have just picked it as a nice buzz-word.

I think by "bandwidth" they mean what parts of the sound return they listen to or, do or don't filter out if you will. My guess is the new software uses digital filters which are always adjusting rather than a set analoge filter. For example, before, an incoming signal was either filtered out, or kept, period. With the new software, it can pass the signal thru one filter(as software filter), but not thru another depending upon what each filter was looking for. A filter looking for the bottom, would disregard shallower echoes while another filter searching for fish would look at those shallow echoes and ignore the deeper ones.... You know, that kind of thingy!! http://thehulltruth.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
Sounds like I know what I'm talkin about anyway, doesn't it? http://thehulltruth.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
Somebody buy me one, and I'll try it out and report back!! http://thehulltruth.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

If the gain is adjusting automatically based on bottom then fish will look diferent even though they are at the same depth. Meaning that fish at 30' in 50' of water will look different as the bottom drops. They could still be at 30', but will now appear different if the bottem drops to 100' or so.
If you want true performance out of any sounder then you need to learn to adjust it manually.
You won't find the NASCAR boys driving automatics.

The transducer still only runs at 50 and 200 khz.
What they are doing is using digital filters, to reject the unwanted signals. Digital filters are inherently tunable, this is where the multi frequency marketing comes in.
