Ok, I have the ability to switch from 600w to 1kw on my sounding unit (furuno 1850f). Before I do, I wondered what I can expect by making the change?

another 400 watts of power.

On a serious note, more power equals stronger signal transmistted, which gives stronger returns, which should give better definition to the object.

The transducers that actually support 1,000 watts are significantly better accoustically than their 600 watt counterparts as they all employ some fashion of multi-element system, normally a single 200khz element and some form of multiple 50khz element system, so you actually get more than just 400 watts more output power. Yopu can find out alot more about the differences in transducers (down to extreme geek level) at AirMar's website, along with screen snapshots comparing the same area with both a 600 watt and a 1kw transducer.
