Anybody who "really" fishes the surf in Montauk might know where I am. There are more signs similar to this one, in the area. Always have to watch out for bombs, ammunition, and mines...

Do a lot of shrimping and crabbing on Dabob Bay here in Washington. There use to be signs that said if the light on ( so and so ) point goes yellow leave the area immediatly. If it goes red before you have left, turn off all electronics and try to make as little noise as possible. It seems that the Navy liked to test their torpedoes in the bay! :o Them dang torpedoes are longer than my boat!
No kidding....the first blood on my new boat was mine. Cut my thumb with a rusty knife trying to free the new anchor line from the multiple wire ties. :trout:

Same thing here, I picked up my boat from the yard after they finished repowering. Got to the end of the channel, threw down the throttles and backed off, well they weren't just right and I ended up slamming my head off the electronics box in front of me. 40 stches later, i was all set.

it can be pretty funny..........surfing the base or turtles and all of a sudden this huge blitz moves in...keep surfing or run back to the truck for a rod........truth is i like to fish from boats....but in 40+ years of surfing montauk....i've seen a lot of fish close in

always tempted to paddle a longboard out and cast from there. Get out side the outer sand bar. Saves gas money and cheaper than a kyack. I have paddled through a blitz before, the ocean blew up around me, wanted to stick my hand in the water and try and snag one, but they were all blue fish and I knew if I stuck my hand in the water I might have less fingers to paddle in with. As for my own blood on the deck, had a little boom box on my work boat. Hit a large wake wave at a high speed(stupid) and my head slammed towards the ground......only thing that kept me from hitting the steering wheel was the radio antenna that went up my nose. The antenna bent in half and tore the hell out of the inside of my nose.

sh23parker........ive fished from my yak (has rod holders built in so i can troll) and even from my longboard on hot summer days..............once about a half mile off cavets cove i hear a low roar....am always scared joe six pack in a go fast boat is gonna run over me....no boat ...start to look skyward...no plane......then i see an area of the ocean about the size of half a football field is all white.....huge blitz....amazing sound......was worried about falling in....would have been messy......antenna up the nose is totaly incorrect.......where you at on the east end?

The boats in north sea, live in southampton. Grandma lives off old mtk highway near mtk village....basically grew up in montauk my favorite place in the world. Avid surfer sailor fisherman from beach or boat. Hope you got to score some of the coves the 9th and the 10th. It was pretty insane. Few good days since then too. Still refuse to surf/fish mtk on a weekend, can't take the crowds anymore. As for the antenna, I had that boom box on there for only a few hours before it happened, hasn't been on the boat since. This rock wall at alamo is making headlines huh?
When I was there sat/sun, there were hundreds of surfers on the southside, jus teast of the trailer park. None near the point, thank god

if you dont like surfers on the southside wait till they allow surfing at north bar....not that its not surfed now...i hit it a half dozen times this year.......been a very good month for fishing and surfing......swell and northwest wind...the dynamic duo.....i tend to skip the weekends also....stay closer to home....live in springs...boat in clearwater

Why is it that you like surfing in such rocky areas? Why not stay at the sand beaches? And about that bill trying to get passed about banning fishing and only allowing surfing around the point, it will never pass. Sorry.

i dont know any one who wants to ban fishing.....no one.....least of all me......the other side of the coin is that lots of fishermen would like to ban surfing.....a funny thing happened....the surfers grew up...no one quit when they were 30 and now the east end has a core group of 50+ year old guys who are by and large ,hard working, tax paying ,good citizens and parents, who have trouble wraping their minds around how come the ocean dosen't belong to them also.....and many fish ,some professionally......as to surf breaks......rock reefs and points form better waves for surfing (generally speaking).....usually resulting in longer rides.....also the cliffs offer some protection from the wind....there is no other area on long island even remotely like montauk.....also....after coral....rocks seem almost soft

The Eastern Chapter of Surfriders at their recent meeting, said they will ask Commissioner Bernadette Castro to make the park from Camp Hero to the North Bar, a "surfing only" park. They would like her to do it before she leaves. Also on their list, they are trying to form an alliance with anti-fishing groups to ban fishing at Montauk Point entirely.
Of course members of the chapter have denied this, but they have been known to lie in the past, so...

i know some guys who are involved with the local surfrider foundation and will ask them about banning fishing at the point........but frankly it is such a stupid and obviously unpopular idea i find it hard to believe anyone would support it...........i certainly wouldnt .....i once had a stack of over 100 lighthouse parking lot tickets...(the little ones they give you when you pay)....every one was a momento of an overhead (mostly)day of surfing at turtles ,north bar, or the base....as much as i have loved surfing the point for the last 40 years......................it never occured to me once to ban fishing...and have found most people friendly

squiddly......i saw a copy of the letter that the surfrider foundation sent castro.....absolutely does not try to ban fishing...(dont think it even mentions fishing)...just tries to make surfing legal.....the email sent to local chapter members urges cooperation with fishermen......

Thanks for clearing that up. I was just relaying what I was told. I still dont see what makes the point area an attractive place to surf. Seems too dangerous...

when the waves get overhead the more organized the better.....sometimes a beach break will turn large waves into some very hollow clean waves ...often not...and it is harder to paddle out with less organization and predictability.......the breaks around the point cause the waves to break in fairly consistant spots relative to the moment.....it changes with tide ,wind, and swell height.... unlike a sand bar the rock reefs dont change shape all the time....this added to the shape of the land affects the swells in a positive way........the waves have a well defined take off spot which is followed by a long (often but not always) very ridable wall........each spot has its own personality.... you have to like sitting in the ocean on long island and the only building you can see is the light house
