Default Leaking Oil From an F225

I just bought a 1994 Parker with a 2002 Yamaha F225. The engine looks pristine, runs perfectly and only has 76 hours on it.

Took it out today for the first time and the engine oil is leaking out very quickly from the lower unit. Previous owner claims to have had it completely checked out by a certified Yamaha mechanic before I took delivery. He also said this mechanic told him to fill it half way on the dipstick because filling it to the full line would make it overflow when running. This seems counter intuitive in retrospect. Did not seem to leak when it was on the trailer, only in the water.

Any advice on likely causes of this or logical course of action would be much appreciated.

Welcome, and good luck with your problem.

If that motor wasn't broken in properly, it could be suffering from the "making oil" syndrome some 4 strokes seem to have. Do you have any smell of fuel in the oil? Some motors not properly broken in will leak fuel into the crankcase, raising the level of oil....

You may want to use the search function and read up on some of the making oil threads...

Thanks for the suggestion. I will read up on this now. I do not smell fuel in the slick, but do not have a great sense of smell. I notice that the previous owner carefully highlighted the break-in procedure in the manual, and he is a farmer with lots of machinery so hopefully he followed through.

Have your dealer check for leakage from the lower crankshaft seal. Many of these engines have problems in this area.
