oil pump failure Mercury Saltwater - The Hull Truth

I lost my outboard this weekend. It was a 2005 200 hp Mercury Saltwater with carb. I heard the pistons start clanking and idled the motor to get out the channel. The engine locked up. There is no alarm on this motor. Just spoke to the mechanic. He said my engine died because of a failure of a plastic wheel that drives the oil pump. Said it has been so many problems there was a $500 kit on the market. I wish I would have known. Now I am looking at a new powerhead. Anyone heard of this?

This is a common problem, The plastic gear on the crankshaft looses its teeth. The aftermarket kit solves the problem.
