Default Mariner 40 hp motor

Could anyone tell me how I can find out the year of a Mariner motor using the ID codes on the motor?
The small plate shows 40E 6E9 S 104342

Any help would be appreciated. That is the only info I have. It is not my motor, I am posting this for a friend.

Older Mariner and Mercury motors use the serial number to identify the engine to lookup parts and service procedures. Contact your Mercury dealer who should be able to give you a range of years that your serial number occurs in. Lower numbers occur earlier in the year group.
