Default yamaha f250 valve adjustment

My engine has lost power over the last 500hrs, used to be able to spin 5850 rpm now wot is only 5400. Will the valve adjustment affect this or is it the ethanol and the fact that my motot has 550 hrs. It is an 06 engine. prop and mounting height are the same.

At 500 hrs you probably need a valve adjustment......

i know i need to do the adjustment but is it enough of an issue to cause a loss of 400 rpms or should i be looking for other issues?

I would not think a valve adjustment would cause this kind of rpm drop. Only 550 hours?? My F115 has over 400 hours and is in no need of valve adjustment. Do you use Ring free? Do you troll alot? Is it running smooth, or does it seem to have a cylinder or two that are not firing properly?

If you don't use Ring Free, or don't use it with every fill up, I would consider a shock treatment, the stuff REALLY works! After the shocker I would run it at the recommended dosage.

Was it a gradual drop, or sudden drop? Is the throttle cable allowing the throttle to advance to WOT position? Just some thoughts, I may be wrong. Do you trailer or wet slip?

Good luck!

Sounds like you need to decarbon the engine. Carbon on the valves will affect valve lash. Valve clearance should never be checked until the engine has been decarboned. The use of Ring Free will slow down carbon buildup but not entirely prevent it. Valve lash should be checked at 500 hours, but it would be unusual to find valves out of spec. The adjustment is done by changing shims. The spark plugs will need to be changed after the engine has been decarboned.

RING FREE...Shock Treatment. Instructions are on the bottle. It REALLY REALLY works True, you will need to replace the spark plugs after.

I have a Yamaha F115 2006 model. I have used RF from DAY 1.
I also have a 1988 Johnson 2o H.P I bought second hand in 2002. It looks like new under the hood. I gave it the RF shock treatment a year ago. Right after (I ran about 4 gallons of fuel through it) I changed the plugs because the shocher really messed them up with the broken up carbon.

Immediately I noticed smoother trolling/idling. Top end I had MORE speed and the motor had a different sound, a smoother, more sharp sound, and the throttle response was noticeably faster.

I am a believer in Ring Free for sureJust follow the instructions on the bottle. Some people will attach a smaller, reserve tank, like a 3 or 6 gallon outboard tank and fill it with fuel & Ring Free to shock it. Be sure to run RF from now on with every fill up. This will really help prevent carbon build up inside on valves, rigs, etc. Good Luck
