Default Yamaha F50 Hard Start

Yamaha F50(2005 I believe) is extremely hard to start when cold...after warm up it starts on the second crank(usually not the first).

What are the potential causes?

Has this engine always started hard or is it recent?

My friend bought it used so I can't really tell you except that he(my friend) didn't seem to think it was a big deal which leads me to believe it has started hard since he bought it about 9 months ago.

I thought it was excessive...I thought he would wear the battery down trying to get it started on the trailer, that's how long it took. Took excessive amounts of choking and throttle in neutral.

Yamaha engines are designed to start with the throttle fully closed. Check your owners manual for starting instructions. If you dont have a manual they can be found online at yamaha-motor.com.
