Default 40 HP Force, engine rpm's build in neatral??

Just purchased a pontoon boat with a early model 40 hp Force outboard.Took it to the lake for the first time today.Just had a new control box installed last week.
Motor cranked quickly and ran fine.Stopped for a swim, chanded gas tank with new gas. Cranked up and while in neutral motor started increasing in rpm's.To high to shift into gear.Hit the auto choke to lower the rpm's enough to be able to put in gear. Funny thing is when you crank the motor, for a few seconds it rev's up on it's on. Also this happens intermittenly. Any advice would be appreciated. Tony

Check for loose linkage on the engine. Throttle plate should be fully closed at idle. If you dont see anything oviously loose, have a tech go through sync and link. Shifting at high rpm will damage the gearcase.
