99 Mariner 50hp starting problem,please help - The Hull Truth

Sometimes when I start the engine and it's running I get a whine from the motor like it's trying to crank over again. I had to remove battery cable to get it to stop.When I attached the cable again it cranked over immediately and the start button wasn't even turned on.Is it the starter or the switch?

The starter solenoid is where I would start troubleshooting. Disconnect the battery and check across the large terminals with an ohmmeter. If you have continuity the solenoid is bad. If the meter shows infinity disconnect the small wires from the solenoid and check for continuity. You should read infinity, unless the button is pushed. The problem should be in one of these areas. Make sure the battery terminals are clean when you finish the repair. Low voltage from corroded terminals can cause solenoid damage.
