Default 1996 150 ocean pro

Hey gang,
I`ve been searching the archives.
You said that the 60 deg block was prone to blowing up to year 1996.
I thought they redesigned the block, mid section and cooling system in 1993.
Should I be concerned?
Tips to keep her in 1 piece?
You also advise against disabling the oil side of the vro, which I did before I read your advice.
Why?
I decarb every 50 hrs now, and am not concerned about the cost of the oil.
Thx,
GFS

You will know when if you have a problem because the engine will begin to missfire. The spark plug for the leaking cylinder will be washed clean. Not all blocks have the casting problem, so if yours is still running you have a good one. I do not recommend disabling the VRO. The early unit gave some problems but by 1996 they were mostly soved. The VRO is like any moving part, they wear out with high hours. If yours is problematic replace it with the latest part. Clean the oil tank, change the filter, and put it back into operation.

1}Why do you not recommend disabling the oil side?

2} I do not feel my boat is overpropped `89 seacraft 20 cc 14.75x 17 p,
but I don`t see 5600. 5200 light load. Would a new vro give me an increase in max rpm?

Motor has 913 hrs and cold compression of 87- 92 on a Mac guage.

I remember about the turkey baster annual on the vro tank.
Been premixing since I was a kid so I don`t think I`ll forget.
Thx,
GF

Premix gives the engine the same fuel oil ratio at all times. Engine operation is more efficient and cleaner if the ratio is less at idle and greater at WOT. The VRO operates like this. When you premix in a built the tendency is to mix a little more oil than necessary. Over time the misture becomes 45-1 or 40-1 which causes smoking and plug fouling. The VRO avoids this problem.
OMC reccomnded propping to the top of the RPM range with a light load. When the boat is normaly loaded the RPM should end up in the middle of the range. This will usually give the best performance.
Engine compression numbers are not as important as the relation of the cylinders to each other. As close as yours are there should not be a problem.
A new VRO would not change RPM unless your present pump is not pumping enough fuel at WOT. A pressure test at WOT will check this.

Thank you for your thoughtful reply. I quess 50 gals fuel, 2-3 people, ice and fishing gear isn`t exactly light. I always use my Seachoice graduated cylinder to mix exactly 50-1 factory oil, startron and Techron. I`ve never fouled plugs , but I understand your position now. My comp #`s are indeed pretty close. Art @ BRP tech said the manufacturers specs for production were from 90-130 . As long as they are nice and close.
Thanks again,
GFS
I fish, therefore I am superstitious.
