Default 1991 Johnson 140 question

I just purchased this motor and I noticed while its at idle I do not get a stream of water out of the pee hole. When I'm at 1/4 throttle and all the way to full throttle it starts to stream out. Then back at idle it just drips. Is this normal for this year/type of engine? Water pump was done 2 years ago when the motor was rebuilt.

Thanks!

No. Does it have thermostats still in if so you might want to put new water pump in.

I have no idea if it has thermostats or where they are even located if the motor has them. Is this something I can replace myself?

Any time you purchase an engine without a repair history you need to replace the water pump, change the gearlube, and replace the fuel filters before the engine is run. Before the engine is purchased you should run a compression test to find the powerhead condition. The amount of water from the overboard indicator can depend on a number of things. Water pump condition, idle speed, and restrictions in the cooling system all have an effect on water flow. The thermostats are located in the top of the cylinder heads. The engine should run about 135 degrees at idle and as the thermostats are bypassed at higher speeds should run cooler. A check of engine temp at idle should show if the system is working correctly.

oil pump meaning VRO?

I'm in the process of adding a 10 micron filter. How/tool do I use to check temp? Is it worth purchasing one?

I typed the wrong word-meant water pump. Best way to check temp is with infrared temp gun, they have become cheap. They are useful for many things.

I found the problem. It was a water pump. The plastic housing got hot at one time and it melted a little and closed off the water port.
