Yamaha won't shift into gear - The Hull Truth

I have a 1999 Yamaha 200 SWS that will not shift into forward or reverse. It had been stiff going into reverse in recent weeks, but now won't shift at all. Is it likely that the entire shift cable will have to be replaced, or will an adjustment possibly cure the problem? If it does have to be replaced, is this a difficult project needing an experienced mechanic, or a reasonably simple fix an average guy can handle?

Remove the shift and throttle cables at the engine. Move the shift lever on the engine while someone turns the prop. THE ENGINE IS NOT RUNNING FOR THIS TEST. If the shift is easily made the problem is in the cables or adjustment, if not it is in the engine. An inproper cable adjustment can cause hard shifting. Cables the are difficult to move must be replaced.
