Oil Leak Repair - The Hull Truth

I have a 1989 Yamaha 200 EXTF. There is oil leaking out of the oil pump. Should I try replacing the O ring that the parts list shows is behind the pump or just replace the pump? Is this a difficult job? Thanks.

It depends where the oil is leaking from. If the oil is leaking between the pump and the block the o ring may solve the problem, if it is coming from the pump it will have to be replaced. The job is not difficult for an experianced tech, but if you mess up the job the engine will lock up.

Thanks for the response. I can not see where the oil is coming from so that leads me to believe it is between the pump and the block, so I guess I will try the o-ring first. Once the pump is off, will it be obvious if the pump is the problem?
