Default i/o issue

My 86 Volvo Penta 5.7 4bbl has started to have a wierd issue. Starts up and runs perfectly first thing and then as the day goes on it is really hard to start but once running runs perfect. I am not sure if it is the carb or distributor or maybe the cap rotor. Doesn't happen asll the time which makes it even stranger. Could the choke possibly be hanging up? Thanks for any help with this.

I'm not sure what you mean by hard to start. Does it turn over at normal speed or turn slowly? If this engine has points how long since the points, condenser, cap and rotor have been changed? If you pump the throttle does that help? When it does start does it smoke black? If you can give me more info I can point you in a direction to troubleshoot.

Yes it turns over normal speed. If I advance the throttle to almost full it seems to help.Did cap and rotor beginning of last season. No black smoke at all when it starts but when turning over it does sound different as if its starving/turning over as if timing was off but we checked and its fine. Should we start with plugs rotor and cap? Hope this explanation helps.

Thanks

Advancing the throttle sounds like flooding. You can look in the distributor cap for corrosion on the contacts. If you see none the cap is still good. You can remove the flame arrestor and check the position of the choke before restarting the engine. If you tell what brand of carburetor is on your engine I can help you more in this area.
