Default pressure check lower unit

I have a pair of 1988 225h.p. evinrudes that I am working to get up and running. How do I go about pressure checking the lower units? Is it necessary? Or do I just do water pumps and oil and go? They dont have any water in them and dont have any obvious leaks. They have been setting for 3 years. Thanks in advance.

Pressure and vacuum checks are normally done to find a leak ar to check on a repair. The check is done using a pressure pump and a vacuum pump equipped with gauges. After the gearcase is drained the pumps are attached and pumped up. The gearcase is allowed to sit for a few minutes and the pressure or vacuum monitored for a drop. If you found no water in the oil drained from the gearcase the checks probably are not necessary. I would change the oil after about 10 hours of operation to check for water.
