Default engine surges

My 01 200 hpdi started to surge today. At one point i couldnt get more than 3500 rpms. When i did get the rpms up i couldnt get more than 4500. I normally get 5200 wide open. Can this be a vst filter problem??

If it is, how do i go about changing it?

Thanks,
Lenny

Yes it could, or it could be a number of other problems. Your dealer can connect a fuel pressure gauge and his computer and tell if the problem is in the fuel system. The oxygen sensor on this engine can also cause problems like surging. The filter is in the reservoir on the side of the engine and requires it to be disassembled for replacement. There is also a filter between the VST and the high pressure belt driven pump that may be plugged. Both of these filters need to be replaced periodically. These engines do not like alcohol blended fuels. If you are using these fuels you may have to replace filters more often. Be sure you have a good water seperating filter in the boat.

Thanks for the reply. i'm going to replace the vst filter this week. I changed the inline filters last year. Hopefully this will solve this issue.

Thanks,
Lenny

I was bringing the boat to the mechanic on sat. I was able to get the engine up to 5200rpms. I brought it back to 3500rpms and then back up to 5200. I did this 5 or 6 times and it ran fine. Except for changing the vst filter I have no clue as to why it is ok now. Maybe a blockage....

I asked the mechanic about it and he said leave it alone and see what happens. No sense bringing it to him and its running fine.

Thanks for all the replies,
Lenny
