Default Johnson OutBoard Question

Hi All,

Greetings from the Virgin Islands!

I am considering purchasing a boat with 2001 Johnson 250 with about 430 hrs on them.

I am relatively new to boating and would appreciate any advice from the veterans on this site. Here are my questions:

1) How well do these Johnson engines perform compared to Mercs and Yamahas? Reliability, fuel consumption, etc.

2) At 8 yrs old with over 400 hrs how soon will they need major repairs or replacement.

3) Rouchly how would it cost to rebuild them?

4) One of the previous owners had this to say : "only problem I ever had was I went threw a couple lower units on the counter rotating port engine" . How serious a problem is that? Costly to repair? Normal wear and tear?

Any advice, suggestions and answers to the above questions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Any time you buy used equipment you may be buying somebodys problem. The present condition of these engines is directly related to the care in maintaining the engines that the previous owners took. Well maintained engines will last many hours. All 250 engines will perform about the same and use about the same amount of fuel. The differences that you see are mostly in setup and propping. Cost of a rebuild will vary depending on the parts that are replaced or repaired. The 250 is a little hard on lower units with the counter being replaced more often. Again it may depend on how well it is maintained. The more info the previous owner can give you including records the more sure you can be about your purchase.
