I would change the lube in the gearcase ASAP. This should ease your mind about oil level. If you don't know the condition of the water pump it should be changed also. It's hard to diagnise noises without actually hearing them. I would use a short length of garden hose (3 feet) as a hearing device. Put one end to your ear and pass the other end over the running engine to see if you can isolate the noise. When you isolate the noise we may be able to tell you what the problem is. Remember that this is a needle bearing engine so you will hear a whirring noise from these bearings.
