Default reinstalling lu on merc 800

Had a little issue on reassembling after water pump replacement I believe it's the reverse lockout shaft. I'm not sure how to position it. My clymer manual is kind of useless on this point. Do I put it in neutral and set it so it's approaching the button? If that makes sense. Any help appreciated. I posted similar on the boating forum but figured it would be best here.

The purpose of the lock is to lock the engine to the bracket while in reverse gear. This will keep the engine from coming up out of the water when you apply power in reverse. When the shifter is in neutral or foward the engine must be unlocked to swing up on impact or to be tilted. Inspect the mechanism to see where the unlocked position is. Mercury lower unit normally are installed in foward gear. Position the gercase in foward and position the cam so the lock is in the unlock position at the end of its travel.

Thanks, it appears this is an extension shaft because my motor was originally a short shaft motor. I'll be working on it tomorrow and it might be obvious but how do I change the unit from neutral to forward by hand?

If you have an assortment of small sockets you may fid one that will fit on the splines. An other way to do this would be to leave the gearcase in neutral, postion the cam so the middle step is lined up with the rod in the exhaust housing, and install the gearcase.
