Hi - I noticed (since I bought it 4 years ago), that my outboard is particularly loud at 3800 rpms. It kind roars (somewhat of an exaggeration, but best description I can give) , like a 4-bbl being opened up. Any reason for concern?

Also, lately it stalls when running at low rpms particularly when coming into a dock and shifting during high anxiety moments (figures!). Might just be low rpm at idle, and I might have to boost her up?

A1 Outboard

IT's hard to hear the noise while in front of a computer, but look for a loose or miss-attached air box on the front of the motor. You also could be hearing a reed noise resonance at that particular rpm also.

The stalling could be any number of things, state of tune, thermostats, idle rpm, plugs, engine condition, etc. You will either need a service manual and go through the servicing step by step or find a good Yamaha mechanic to check it over for you.
