I have a 2003, 200hp BRP outboard. I am sorry, but I do not have the exact model number. The check engine light stays on. When I first start the engine all of the lights work as they go through the cycle. The check engine alarm sounds for a few seconds and then goes off, and the check engine light remains on.
The engine has 225 hours on it. The engine does not get hot or anything unusual. I have not run it with the light on because my manual says it may be fuel related. Do you have any ideas ?? I am thinking a sensor or filter that needs attention. Thanks in advance.

A number of malfunctions will cause the CHECK ENGINE light to come on, it is similar to the one in your car.
From your description, I'll bet there is water in the fuel filter on the motor. Replace the filter, part no. 502906, and pour out the old one into a glass jar and see if water separates at the bottom. If so, check your boat filter and gas tank for more water.
If that isn't it, then you will need to see a tech with the diagnostic software to check the error code(s) to see what is wrong.

I have a" 01" 250. I have the same problem. In the past when I got the check engine light for water in the fuel, the engine ran rough, after I changed the filter everything was fine. This time I changed the filter and the check engine light came right back, I have the manual so I cleared the codes, and rechecked codes and got code 11, which is all clear no codes stored. Started the motor check engine came right back. Checked the codes, again it was #37 "water in the fuel". I believe it is a bad sensor.

A common occurance like that is the 2 wire probes for the sensor get bent during filter intallation and they either touch a metal part of the filter or each other which triggers the engine computer to send a CHECK ENGINE code. There also could be a shorted wire or connector in the circuit, and do not overlook a bad gauge.

I made sure the wires were straight when I installed the filter. I'm thinking it could be a short. I don't believe a bad gauge could trigger a #37 code right?

Nope,a badgauge won't trigger a code, but it could keep a warning light on continuously. If the CHECK ENGINE light stays on and the code 37 is stored each time the key in turned to ON, then it's a sensor, wiring, or even possibly an EMM-ECU problem.

I just had the EMM replaced by Bomb 3 weeks ago. It took a month to get it and code started one week after the new one was re-installed, (by dealer). At a cost of $1500.00 and missing the month of June,(in a short season) I hope it's just the sensor.
Ran into this same issues over the weekend, water in fuel alarm sounded on one of my twin e-tec 250's, got it home pulled the engine mounted water/fuel filter dumped in a jar no water at all replaced with a new filter making sure the probs were not damaged during install, started it up still alarmed, so I pulled the bigger filter that's connected right behind the fuel tank, drained that one in a jar no water in that one either so I'm thinking a bad sensor.
Yes it did store the code. I talked to the dealer he said it shouldn't be the computer. He also said it could be the gauge, and he has seen a bad gauge store codes. (don't see how, but I'm also not a mechanic).
So if I unplug the water sensor and don't get the warning, it's the sensor. If I still get the warning, it's either a bad gauge or possibly a short in the wiring that comes from the sensor.
I'll get to the boat tomorrow, and try unpluging the sensor. I have all I-command gauges and more then one gauge alarms when it sounds, if one of the gauges is bad could it make the other gauge sound as well?

I-Command is all digital and haven't had a problem with them, I was thinking SystemCheck gauges.
Please start a new thread/question instead of adding to someone elses post. There are 3 different people asking questions in this single thread, and not only is it getting confusing to me, but I'm sure to others also. Thanks.
