Default Johnson 9.9 shift adjustment!!

2000 Johnson 9.9. After changing a few water pumps I damaged the brass coupling that joins the two shift rods together. Now when in neutrel I can hear and feel the reverse gears hitting. If I gently pull the shift lever towardss forward it stops but starts again.

How do I adjust this?

Thanks,
Keith

Adjustment is easy, according to the service manual, you screw the shaft all the way in and only turn it outward just enough to line up the offset.

Be sure to install new brass pieces on both ends and new plastic tapered retainers. IF it still acts up, there is some adjustment up at the shift lever linkage area on the stb. side of the motor. I'd recommend using the service manual or hiring an experienced mechanic for that.

Thanks, if I read this right I will screw the lower unit shift rod in or out to make the adjustment I need.
