Default engine start-up problem

my 1994 - 2-stroke mercury 135hp engine takes several tries to turn over. actually several tries before you hear it start to sound like it's about to turn over. each time we turn the key before that the sound it gives off is a type of monotone buzz. We took the batteries out and made sure they were charged fully. We cleaned the connectors real good and made sure all the connections were good and tight. Going on vacation soon and want to fix this problem so it starts a bit quicker. trying to fix myself if anyone has any ideas I would greatly appreciate it!!!

Default RE: engine start-up problem

I would say start with checking the engine ground wire at both ends. Mine looked great on the outside but when I cut it at the battery end, it was gross on the inside. I replaced with a new cable and problem solved. That whirring sound was probably the starter spinning but the bendix not engaging it to the flywheel same as mine was doing. Good luck, A-1 will surely get you straight.

That buzzing sound you hear it either the solenoid chattering or the starter moaning from a lack of voltage. You can test it using a voltmeter at the battery terminal at the solenoid to see what the voltage is when you first try to start the motor. Also check at the starter terminal.

Check the battery voltage when you start it to see if it remains close to 12V which means the power is not going anywhere due to a cable or connection problem.

Have the batteries load tested to make sure they are up to snuff.
