Default Evinrude 175 overheating

1990 evinrude 2 stroke

Okay heres heres what Ive done
replaced boththermostats
replaced water pump

Symptoms
Put muff on to flush and sometime it will flush and others it will heat up and alarm
yesterday had it out and was running at around 1200 rpms and the overheat alarm went off when I shut it down a few times the temperature would stay a little hotter than the other engine

then Id idle both engines sometimes and the same on would start to heat up I put it up on plane and the temp is perfect

then later in the afternoon idled it all the way for a mile in a no wake are and no troubles at all Got back to the house to flush one engine flushed right away this same engine wouldnt pump want up water and the over heat alarm went off after a min then shut it down let it cool for 45 min retried and same thing took the water hose off the fitting on the back of the block and was pumping a stream out not out the hose though checked for restrictions in the hose from the block out the pee hole and no obstructions found I let it idle and flush with water streaming out the fitting but then overheat alarm went off again but pumping a stream out the back of the motor

So anyways any help would be appreciated

Thanks
Tony

Default Re: Evinrude 175 overheating

We're talking about an 18 year old motor here that could have all kinds of hidden problems and corrosion.

Not only should the thermostats be replaced, but the pressure relief valves and seats could be sticking and cuasing an overheat condition. If only the impeller was replaced, or an aftermarket water pump kit installed, the could also contribute to the problem. Make sure the factory #5001594 water pump kit is intalled correctly and have the copper water tube inspected closely at the same time.

Another thing to try is to remove the water covers on each cylinderhead along with the heads and clean out the water channels that may be restricted or plugged up with sand, salt, or mud. There are rubber deflectors around the cylinders that should be replaced as age and overheating can distort them and change the cooling water flow.

An overheating problem is like climbing a tree, you keep moving up one branch at a time until the problem is solved. Start with the basics, waterpump, thermostats, and pressure valves, then work your way up from there. Good luck.
