not shifting into forward gear - i assume the quickest fix would be a lower unti rather than a teardown - any idea where i could fins one for this motor ???

Check around with different dealers as those were common engines and there may be blown motors laying around from which you can buy a gearcase. I believe most parts are still available for the gearcase components also.
