Default anchor rode wrapped around prop

In a momentary act of stupidity I caught my anchor rode with my prop. I was running at a high idle and it killed the engine very quickly. The 3/8" rope jammed in between the prop and the lower unit. I was able to get it out and make it back in at low cruising speed but it didn't sound or feel right. I didn't try to go any faster than that. When I drained off the lower unit lube it was milky white indicating water had gotten in. I just replace the lube last month, so the leak was obviously caused by this event. There did not appear to be any metal fragments in the oil. There also appears to be some slight play both up/down and in/out that I never notice before. Maybe this is normal. I'm wondering what possible damage do I have and how involved is the repair?
Thank you for your time.

I doubt the rope caused the water in the oil problem, unless it damaged the propshaft seal somehow. A pressure and vaccuum check will show where the leak or leaks are. Unless you have the manual, press, and a few special installers or removers, it is best to have a professional do the seals.

The wound up rope could cause a bent shaft or deformed blades on the prop to make it feel funny. A professional can put a dial indicator on the shaft and check for any runout. The prop should be sent off to a repair shop for inspection.

On a regular rotation gearcase, there will be in and out play on the shaft, and with wear, perhaps a very small up and down movement.

Thank you for your quick response, especially on a holiday. I'm pretty certain the rope trashed the seal at the hub. It looks roughed up it is not making good contact with the shaft. If I spin it by hand I can see a milky mix oozing out. The sudden stop partially spun the prop so hopefully that is the reason for the "rough" feel after the incident. I have the lower unit removed from the motor, so I will take it to my local mercury dealer here in NJ.

Thanks again
