Default 1998 175 johnson oceanrunner

My 175 oceanrunner has 750 hours and has run great with out problems untill last week. I was out for about 4 hours and the sea was a little rough for me so it was fast idle speed (2500 RPM) all of the time. The motor was not shut off at all even at the ramp, got home and went to flush motor and it will not crank, turns over with starter but will not fire up. Thru out the day there was no alarms or even a sputter it ran great, the oil use for the day was normal, from the time of shut down to the attempted restart was about 2 hours. Any thoughts on were to start.

First you have to find out if it is a lack of fuel problem or a lack of spark problem since the starter cranks the motor over OK. If the motor cooled down enough by the time you got home, perhaps the "choke" (primer solenoid) is not working.

First check your lanyard kill swich if it is a separate item from the key switch. Check for spark, the safest way is with a timing light. Squeeze the ball and make sure fuel is flowing and there is no water in it.

Once you narrow down which type of problem, you can then target the cause.

I had some time to do some checking. The safty lanyard is in place, there is fuel inethe line from the bulb, and the primer clicks when the key is pushed in. I had no spark when I checked the plug s and I checked the compression and all are at 100 + - 1 ro 2 psi. I took it to the local service shop for Johnson they seemed to think it could be a short or power pack problem while there they are doing the lower unit service and empelier. Does this sound like the right trac or is there an other idea you may have to look for or check. thank for your replie Jay

The ignition system has several components and one or more could have failed. The cheapest is the electric eye sensor which is around $70. Also there is the electronic pack, the stator under the flywheel, or the wiring on the engine or in the boat and key switch, or any of the connections. If the pack determined to be the culprit, then also install a new electric eye with the pack.

Thanks a-1 for the information. The shop has said that the stater has gone bad he did not know why it would just quit all at one time. I have a few questions. I was told the stater has 2 parts (charging and ignition) is it all one piece or should both parts be replaced. When they replace the stater should I still put a new electric eye. And any other things you would recommend to replace while the flywheel is off or for preventive reasons. Thanks Jay

The stator is one piece but consists of 4 separate parts, alternator windings, 2 high voltage charge coil windings for charging the 2 capacitors inside the (CDI) power pack, and a power coil thatsupplies currenttothe power pack logic systems and the electric eye.

For reliability, go ahead and replace the electric eye while everything is apart.
