Re: Does this quote seem fair? Outboard shop in Ca at $90 an hour for service on Yamaha HPDI 200? At $90 per hour, then subtract the parts and labor for the trim switch and tabs, it sounds like they are not replacing all the required filters or doing everything that should be done on those engines. On the HPDI motors, there is an inlet fuel fillter at around $30 or so plus a mid-pressure filter between the VST and the high-pressure belt driven fuel pump that sells for about $90. Yamaha now recommends that both be replaced at 100 hr. intervals. If you have boat mounted filters, those should be changed also because of alcohol in today's fuels.
They are not replacing the O2 sensors as those go for over $300 apiece, but insist that the sensors be cleaned, especially the small tube that routes the exhaust gases to the O2 sensor. They should check the sensor operation using a digital voltmeter and the Yamaha adapter test cable while they water test the boat.
If you run near sand, mud, or shell, the whole water pump kit should be installed, not just the impellers. Thermostats should also be looked at and tested if needed. There is a poppet valve that needs checking during cooling system service.
If you don't use it regularly, Ring Free should be added to your gas tank to help eliminate carbon buildup inside the engine.
Be sure to ask the dealer for the engine computer printout from the laptop and diagnostic software for your records.
By now you may be realizing that the HPDI motors are close to being the most expensive outboards to maintain. Dont' forget that there are zinc anodes that need replacing too.
