Re: 2002 Yamahas F225 The first thing should be a complete servicing of the cooling system. Install a new water pump kit, factory not aftermarket, new thermostats, and clean and check the pressure relief valve.
If everything has been done and checked out, but it still overheats ONLY at idle but is fine just above idle, then you may have exhaust mid-section corrosion that is allowing exhuast gases into the colling water. At higher rpms, the water pressure is high enough to keep the exhaust out. In that case a dealer would have to remove the gearcase and look up into the engine and possibly pull the powerhead and inspect the exhaust area. It's not a real common problem with the F225 series but it is starting to show up as the motors get a few years under their belts.
