Default oceanrunner

The motor is a 1996 150 johnson oceanrunner. Initial crankup at the house before heading to the ramp is fine, running the boat out to the beach it runs great and idles fine. But upon the return run the motor wants to sneeze and idle roughly when put into gear and no gas applied. This is not the first time it has done this, I would say it is about the fifth or sixth time. Also after sitting over night it runs fine and then acts up after sitting for awhile.

There are a number of things that could cause those symptoms. Check the intake manifold gasket color, if they are black, get them replaced with the newer brown or reddish colored ones. Also check the sync and link adjustments outlined in the service manual. It is important that all the throttle plates are closed completely and open at the same time. Vapor lock can also give a similar symptom which means the gasoline is boiling inside the fuel lines from excessive vacuum and/or alcohol content, or to much of a gas additiive. Make sure the thermostats are keeping the motor about 140 degrees at idle.
