Default 2000 200HP Evinrude FICHT

A1,

We are currently looking at a boat rigged with the above motor. I have seen a few reviews on the net that were not so favorable. What is your opinion of these motors? It seems like most of the reviews say there should have been service done to them to correct factory issues. What should I be asking about?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give!

I had 2001 225 HP Fitch When the motor ran, it ran fine but I had many issues most of which were not covered by the warranty Replacing both the High pressure & Low Presuure Fuel Pumps, Replacing oil pump. Blowing out two injectors after the factroy bolt upgrade I needed to retap the Head & install Helico coils. Mystery alarms ususally at low or idle speed The Final staw was the injectors blowing out several mile off the beach & running home w/ gas pouring out the cowling. I had enough
I am not trying to bash Evinrude as I owned them for over 20 years just to relay my experiece w/ this one 225 HP Fitch but after spending over on a Fitch $14000 & $ 2000 grand for repairs I guess am bias about this engine (Sold it for to a dealer for parts $for $1400 only 300 hours )

I beleive the Evinrude E-Tecs have solved all the issue Evinrude had w/ Fitch & E-tec'sare light years beyond Fitch

You are talking about an 8 year old motor that probably does not have much time on it. When a motor sits without proper storage procedures, problems "grow" in the motor.

The 2000 had a checkered history. For the most part they ran fine and were the first year redesign of the FICHT engines. Some of the quality control of parts was lacking in those years so there were some problems that were not design related, but component related. If the engine was well maintained by a trained tech, it should be OK, but it still is 8 years old and possibly in salt water. That makes any engine suspect.

Have a trained tech check the motor over thoroughly, do a water test, and give you a printout of the engine history stored in the motor's computer. Like buying anything used, it is a crap shoot.

Thanks for the advice. I've been looking for this particular hull for awhile. I just wish it didn't have the FICHT hooked to the back. The boat is listed through a broker and he was unsure of the hours. He said this particular model because of its age doesn't have the hours recorded on the computer. Is there any truth to that?

He either does not know anything about low emission motors or he is outright lying to you. Since 1998 they have to have a permanent record of running time per the EPA and CARB.

Even though they run good when kept up, the FICHT motors have a very low value prior to 2002, when Bombardier took over Evinrude. Make sure the boat is priced right for the hull, accessories, and trailer, but the motor has very little resale value.
