Default Help with my Evinrude Please!!!

I have a pair of 2003 Evinrude Ficht 250 hp. Today offshore we noticed an excessive amount of smoke coming from the port engine. It appeared to be burning way too much oil. Well it was. 30 miles off shore we get the “low oil” warning. (the tank had been almost full when we set out.) I had an extra gallon which I put in and headed for home. We got with a couple of miles before it ran out and shut down. Ran in slow the rest of the way on one. Anyone have an idea what it could be before I call the mechanic.

Not only check the oil return line for kinking or being squashed, but has the oil tank been worked on or replaced recently? An older tank can be retrofitted with a return oil fitting and sometimes the installer forgets to drill the hole thru the tank for oil to flow. The return line is then "stopped up" and the oil pressure builds up avbove 60psi and flow through the injector, flooding the motor with lube.

Other common areas for the return line to get kinked or smashed is thru the front of the motor cover under the clamp and where the hose goes through the transom well of the boat.

Let us know what you find out.

Well went down to the boat today and checked for kinks. No visible sign of any. Did loosen the clamp that holds the cable that go into the motor down. Pulled a bit of slack up on that hose. Did not see any major problems. Fired up the engine and behold no smoke. Disconnected the oil return hose from the tank and there was a good oil flow through the return. It seems it is fixed. I do not like the idea that I did not find the root of the problem. I wonder if I have a pressure regulator that is sticking. If so I guess it will show up again. Will keep up you updated.
