Default 93 Johnson 90 HP

I received in trade last Fall a 1993 Johnson 90 HP VRO that had been professionally maintained and winterized. I started it up this past week without a hitch and ran it (it is on a 17' Montauk) today for a sea trial which also went fine as it shifts smoothly fairly quite etc.

The question I have is that it seems to be spitting green grease from the prop and I am not sure what it is or if I should be concerned? I did not see anything coming out of the lower unit plugs and it ran cool today. I am wondering if it is simply some of the grease that the mechanic put on before putting it away for the winter?

I appreciate any advice.

I'm not sure what you mean by "green grease" but most likely it is an emulsion from the water, unburned fuel and oil, and carbon from the exhaust pipe that slowly dripped down and out the prop and gearcase opening. Most of the time it is a black or dark grey color.

It is common when the motor does not get run hard enough to burn out the excess oil and usually occurs after prolonged idle or low speed running. Thermostats that don't allow the motor to reach the proper temperature can contribute to the weeping.

To be on the safe side, remove the bottom gearcase drain screw and inspect the oil for water intrusion. It will either drain some clear water or the whole gearcase will have a milkshake looking color to it.
