90hp evinrude 1989 700hours - The Hull Truth

Went to use this trusty old motor today and turn the key nothing. Alarm sounds when I turn the key but nothing. Press down on the key souns like choke is kicking in but turn the key nothing. Pull the cover and use a screwdriver to turn the engine over and starter turns motor over just like it should. What happened to old trusty? Any help would be gratly appreciated.

Are you sure the shift lever is in neutral?

Don't forget that there is a neutral safety switch inside the control box that could be disconnected, out of adjustment, or faulty. Trace the yellow/red wires from the key switch to the neutral switch, then all the way to the starter solenoid.

Pulled the quiksilver control handle out and pushed forward like always. Jockyed back and forth no luck.

Could this be a relay? When I short across the relay I get it to turn over.

First you have to determine if voltage is reaching the terminal with the yellow-red wire when the key is turned to START. Then make sure the ground circuit from the solenoid is OK.

Voltage is there when the key is on. How do I determine if the ground is ok?

Now I am totally confused went out to test the key on off voltage and the damn thing turns over now. What the hull is going on?
