Starting problem Yamaha 4 stroke

I am having an issue with the way my motor starts. when i initially go to start it the starter engages just like it should and then 1-2 seconds it disengages before the motor starts. Therfore i have to turn the key 3,4,5,6 times before it actually starts. When the motor is warm it usually starts instantly. Please help. 50hp 2004
