Re: Question on 1972 Evinrude 50hp Remove the black yellow wire from the ignition switch and the kill switch (if you have one) and check for spark. If there is now spark, the switch was bad. If not, remove the same colored wire from the igntion pack (also called Power Pak) and try again. If still no spark, then components are bad.
You can download a troubleshooting manual from the cdielectronics website under the downloads button. They give specs for the components and how to check things. You will need a good digital meter and a DVA adapter to test the parts for resistance and outputs. You may also need a flywheel puller to get to the stator and timer base for inspection. Good luck.
